In the wake of the founding of BSU, Zhang Wenguang, the great master of Wushu, formed a team of teachers for Wushu training and scientific research in 1953. With the continuous development of Wushu specialty and discipline, BSU set up the Wushu Department according to the national requirements in August 1958, and enrolled the first batch of graduate students majoring in Wushu Theory and Methods. Zhang Wenguang became the first master degree students supervisor of Wushu in China. Professor Zhang Guangde created “Daoyin Yangshenggong” in the 1970s, and won the National Sports Science and Technology Progress Award in 1992. In 1996, “Daoyin Yangshenggong” was identified by the state as one of the first national fitness program promotion projects. Now it has been spread to nearly 70 countries and regions around the world. In the 1980s, together with a cohort of his colleagues, Professor Men Huifeng wrote the Shaolin Wushu textbook, which crystallized the essence of Shaolin Wushu. The original “Mount Tai Tai-Chi” that Professor Men performed on a sunny morning on Mount Tai was a great demonstration Tai-Chi to the world.
Over sixty years since the founding of China Wushu School, the Teaching and Research Section of Taolu has been digging into traditional Wushu and its cultural connotations while keeping on innovating and optimizing its programs, curriculum development as well as teaching materials in order to bring the discipline of Wushu to the highest level possible. Our graduates are equipped with both Wushu competence and moral integrity. With Sanda as the main course, the Teaching and Research Section of Wushu Sanda actively expands the specialty direction with successive “Wushu Combat” courses that fully reflect the unarmed and armed fighting in the Wushu combats. The “Mixed Martial Arts” course combines various techniques of martial arts, and the “Self-defense” course is tailored for the general public, and the “Short Weapons” course is on armed fighting in martial arts. These 3 courses constitutes an all-round curriculum. The Teaching and Research Section of Sports and Health Preservation has committed itself to the disciplinary research on teaching, scientific research and promotion of Daoyin Qigong, Health Qigong and Health Preservation Tai Chi, which plays an important role in promoting traditional culture, improving people’s health and advancing the development of the fitness industry. Having developed a series of Qigong such as “Health Qigong-Ba Duan Jin”, “Health Qigong-Shi Er Duan Jin”, “Health Qigong-Twelve Methods of Daoyin Yangshenggong”, “Research on Cardio Exercise Prescription of Health Qigong”, and “Development of Popular Science Textbook on Health Preservation of Emperor Qianlong”, the Section of Sports and Health Preservation enjoys a great reputation in the field of sports and health preservation both home and abroad. The Teaching and Research Section of National Folk Sports has committed itself to the integration of ethnic culture, folklore, traditional moral theories combined with modern educational concepts, and digged into the original ecological traditional Chinese sports to protect the intangible cultural heritage of traditional Chinese sports. Faculty of the section have published 26 textbooks, presided over or participated in 12 national key scientific research projects, and won 12 scientific research awards. Currently, China Wushu School has been taking the responsibility of training multi-level and high-quality versatile elite talents including undergraduates, postgraduates, high-level athletes and international students majoring in Wushu and Traditional Chinese Sports.
Sixty years since its establishment, China Wushu School has always been inheriting the Wushu culture and carrying forward the national spirit. It has played a vital role in the formulation of Taolu and Sanda competition rules at the national level , the creation of Wushu Changquan (long boxing) and Tai Chi Tournament, the creation of technological and theoretical system of Wushu Sanda sports, the establishment of rank system of Chinese martial arts and the compilation of Chinese martial arts school textbooks. It has also completed a number of national martial arts research projects and making outstanding contributions to the inheritance, development and publicity of Chinese Martial Arts. In the 1980s, China Wushu School promoted the international cultural exchanges of traditional Chinese sports both home and abroad. It successfully held the 13th International Wushu Exchange Competition (held at BSU) and the 14th International Competition of Daoyin Yangshenggong. Nearly 1,000 international students (long-term and short-term) have been cultivated successively. The faculty members of China Wushu School have visited more than 80 countries and regions in the past sixty years for martial arts teaching and training, international competition officiating, academic lecture and promotion of Health Qigong. It is a great honor for teachers and students to have been part of President Xi Jinping’s delegation for martial arts performances during his state vists. They also performed for visiting foreign leaders demonstrating the unique feature of Chinese Martial Arts. In 2018, on behalf of CWS, participants won 79 gold medals, 48 silver medals and 26 bronze medals.in 17 international and domestic competitions.
At the dawn of a new era , CWS firmly takes the ideal and faith of socialism with Chinese characteristics as its theoretical guidance, adheres “Traditional culture inheritance and promotion”& “Innovation and sharing” in combination with the BSU comprehensive reform of “three transformations”(from experience-based to more technology-driven sports university; from summer sports focused to summer and winter balanced sports university; from natively focused to internationally oriented sports university); promotes the connotative development of professional disciplines with the goal of “internationalization,,more competition, modernization, popularization and scientification”, the foundation of talents cultivation, and the core of high-quality combination of teaching, scientific research and training, insisting on “cultivating students competent both intellectually and physically”. Consequently, in order to achieve the great Chinese dream of a powerful and healthy nation, all members of CWS will work jointly to contribute to cultivating students with a strong sense of mission of carrying on grand traditional Chinese sports culture.
